Prior to setting up my own private piano studio in 1983, I worked in the
pop music business, firstly as a secretary for the renowned blues
musician Alexis Korner, and subsequently as venue manager for the
legendary Dingwalls Club in London's Camden Lock.
I started learning piano at the age of 9 in 1967 and continued lessons at school until leaving in 1976.
I continued my piano studies with concert pianist and professor Nelly Ben-Or at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama from 1981 to 1982.
I have been performing regularly in Piano Repertoire Classes and concerts for advanced pianists at the City Literary Institute, London, studying from 1991 to 1995 with Kenneth van Barthold, and since 2009 with Petros Moschos.
I also completed two years of study on the Diploma Musicianship Course at the City Literary Institute as well as composition workshops with Robert Plowright.
I have experience of teaching piano to students with special needs, including Asperger's Syndrome, Down's Syndrome, elective mutism, hydrocephalus, and hearing and visual impairment. My additional training as an occupational therapist in combination with my musical skills helps me to enable students appropriately to fulfill their potential. I sometimes use an alternative system of notation called Figurenotes (provided by Drake Music of Scotland) which some students find easier to make sense of.
As well as being a competent and enthusiastic pianist, I compose and arrange music for pianists and choirs. In 2012 I was privileged to enjoy the world premiere performance by The Pink Singers at the Cadogan Hall, London, of my choral setting of the Yeats poem "The Lake Isle of Innisfree", and this was performed by the choir once again in January 2016 at the same venue.
I also play recorders, bass
guitar, electro-acoustic guitar, clarinet and violin to about a Grade 3
level. I love trying out any kind of musical instrument, and recently passed my Grade 5 French Horn exam with Distinction after just over two years of lessons.
I have also attended courses on Dalcroze Eurhythmics and the Kodaly Method and my piano teaching has been inspired and invigorated by learnings from these courses.
Since 2013 I have taken part in summer schools run by CoMA (the Contemporary Music Association) and have written and performed new and contemporary music with the guidance of course tutors including Michael Finnissy, Tansy Davies and Adam Swayne.
